Shrubs 2 m tall, the stems minutely stellate-pubescent becoming glabrescent. Leaf blades mostly 5-7 cm long, ovate-lanceolate, remotely and coarsely dentate, sparsely and minutely pubescent above and beneath; petioles 3-7 mm long; stipules 6-8 (-11) mm long, subulate, glabrous, erect, rigid, persistent. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils; pedicels 5-10 mm long; involucel basally rounded, the bracts 8, 9-12 mm long, linear, nearly distinct, minutely stellate-pubescent; calyx 7-9 mm long, brownish, cylindrical (or somewhat urceolate), neither accrescent nor inflated, the lobes ca. 2 mm long, often purplish with paler veins, triangular-acute; petals 15-18 mm long, 5 mm wide, red, narrowly spatulate, erect, forming a tubular corolla; staminal column twice as long as corolla, pallid, the filaments 2-3 mm long, distally placed, the anthers 50-60; styles slender, glabrous, the stigmas less than 0.5 mm in diameter.
