Descripción

Shrubs or more commonly trees, glabrous or pubescent, usually glandular punctate. Leaves petiolate, the blades ovate or trilobulate, entire, obtuse to acuminate, often with abaxial foliar nectaries. Flowers large and showy, borne singly on axillary pedicels (sometimes aggregated apically), sometimes with bracteate articulation; involucel of 3 to many elements, sometimes subtended by trimerous nectaries; calyx truncate to 5-lobed; petals white, yellow (in ours), or rose, with or without a dark spot at base; staminal column pallid, usually included, apically 5-dentate; style single, the 3-5 stigmatic lobes decurrent. Capsules 3-5- loculate, coriaceous or ligneous, dehiscent or indehiscent; seeds several per locule, glabrous or pubescent. Base chromosome number: x = 13.A

Thespesia is a genus of seventeen species from Nueva Guinea, Asia, Africa, and the West Indies, with one species widely distributed in the littoral zone of the tropics. Thespesia occurs rarely in Mexico. A
