Descripción

Annual herbs, erect, usually widely branching, more or less stellate-pubescent, the stems apparently hollow. Leaves petiolate, the blades orbicular in outline, crenate-dentate to more or less deeply parted, lacking foliar nectaries; stipules subulate or lanceolate. Flowers solitary or grouped in the leaf axils, sometimes crowded apically; involucel trimerous, persistent, the bracts linear; calyx 5-lobed; petals white, pinkish, or rose-purple, often showy; androecium included, antheriferous at apex, the column glabrous; styles 12-35, exceeding androecium, the stigmas capitate. Fruits schizocarpic, a depressed disk, glabrous; mericarps 12-35, indehiscent, reticulate or ridged laterally and dorsally, brown or blackish; seeds solitary, subglabrous. Base chromosome number: x = 10.

Discusión taxonómica

Eremalche is a genus of three (or four) low desert annuals from southern California and northern Baja California, and adjacent parts of Arizona and Sonora. Two species occur in Mexico.A
