Descripción
Shrubs or rarely small trees 2-3 (-6) m tall, the stems softly and minutely stellate-puberulent. Leaf blades mostly 10-15 cm long, broadly ovate, deeply cordate, obscurely serrate, acuminate, discolorous, softly puberulent (hairs ca. 0.1 mm long); petioles equaling the blades or sometimes longer; stipules 1.5-2 cm long, prominent and foliaceous but early deciduous, sessile, asymmetrically auriculate, acuminate. Inflorescence an ample terminal panicle; pedicels 1-1.5 cm long; calyx 6-10 mm long, ca. half the length of the fruit (smaller in specimens from the Islas Tres Marias), hirsute, the hairs 0.5-1 mm long, more than half-divided, the lobes lanceolate-acute, erect to spreading; corolla without a dark center, the petals 6-9 mm long, orange, somewhat fleshy, more or less reflexed; staminal column 3-4 mm long, pallid, stellate-pubescent at least at base, the filaments 1-1.5 mm long, the anthers usually purplish; styles 8-10, slightly exceeding androecium. Fruits ca. 1 cm long and wide, blackish; mericarps 8-10, ca. 3-seeded, apically acuminate, prominently hirsute, the hairs 1-1.5 mm long; seeds 2 mm long, minutely verruculate.
