Shrubs 2-3 m tall, usually pilose with simple hairs 1-2 mm long, the stem hairs slightly retrorse, and with smaller stellate hairs. Leaf blades mostly 8-12 cm long, ovate, deeply cordate, serrate, acuminate, slightly discolorous, pubescent above and more densely so beneath; petioles more than half the length of the blades (rarely subequal); stipules 15 mm long, 10 mm wide (smaller in inflorescence), asymmetrically auriculate, caducous. Inflorescence a terminal panicle; pedicels 0.5-2 (-3) cm long; calyx 4-8 mm long, divided almost to the base, the lobes narrowly lanceolate, fully reflexed in fruit; petals 7-9 mm long, pale yellowish or buff, with a diffuse dark spot at the base, sometimes reflexed; staminal column 4-5 mm long, densely pubescent basally, the filaments 1 mm long, the anthers yellow; styles 8-12, slender, glabrous. Fruits 12-20 mm long, 12-15 mm in diameter, hirsute; mericarps 8-12, 3-seeded, prominently keeled dorsally, basally rounded, apically acute; seeds 2 mm long, blackish, essentially glabrous. Abutilon divaricatum var. hintonii Fryxell, Brittonia 32: 265 (1980) differs from var. divaricatum principally in lacking the long, somewhat retrorse hairs that are found on the stems, petioles, and pedicels of the nominate variety. It lacks the basal petal spot and also differs in geographical distribution.A
