Description
Subshrubs to 1.5 m tall, moderately branched, roughly stellate-pubescent (not viscid), the hairs often yellowish, both sessile and stipitate. Leaf blades 2-10 cm long, 1.5-5.5 cm wide, cordate to ovate, basally truncate to cordate, obscurely to prominently crenate-serrate, usually acuminate, slightly discolorous, the lower surface more densely pubescent than the upper; petioles 1-4 (—6) cm long, usually shorter than the blades; stipules 6—8 mm long, subulate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils or aggregated into racemes or panicles; pedicels 1.5-3 (-5.5) cm long, articulated 3-7 mm below the flowers, subequal to the petioles; calyx 9-12 mm long, densely stellate-pubescent, the lobes basally cordate and overlapping (plicate in bud), acuminate; corolla rotate, without a dark center, the petals 10-12 mm long, orange-yellow, stellate-pubescent on margin of claw, otherwise glabrous; staminal column 3-4 mm long, stellate~pubescent, the filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long, the anthers yellow; styles 8-10, glabrous, exceeding androecium. Fruits 9-14 mm long, 10-16 mm in diameter, equaling or slightly exceeding the calyx; mericarps 8-10, nearly always 3-seeded, apically acuminate, with uniformly minute stellate hairs and with longer (0.5-1 mm) simple hairs on dorsal margin; seeds 3 mm long, with minute recurved scabridulous hairs arranged in a reticulate pattern.
