Robust erect herbs or subshrubs to 2 m tall, usually branching only in the inflorescence; stems usually reddish or purplish pigmented, minutely glandular- pubescent to glabrate. Leaf blades mostly 8-10 (-20) cm long, broadly rotund- ovate, deeply cordate, obscurely serrulate, acuminate, velvety-pubescent above and beneath, strongly discolorous (whitish beneath); petioles subequal to the blades; stipules subulate (lost early and seldom observed). Inflorescence an ample terminal panicle rising above the leaves; pedicels 0.5-3.5 cm long, articulated 7-10 mm below the flowers; calyx 3-6 mm long, minutely stellate-tomentose, 1/2-2/3 divided, the lobes lance-ovate; corolla rotate, without a dark center, the petals 9-15 mm long, pale yellow; staminal column 3 mm long, glabrous, pallid, the filaments 2 mm long, the anthers yellow; styles ca. 10, slender, the stigmas purplish. Fruits 7- 10 mm long and wide, globose, minutely stellate-tomentose, blackish at maturity; mericarps ca. 10, apically obtuse; seeds 2.5-3 mm long, sparsely appressed- scabridulous, the hairs arranged in reticulate lines.
