Shrubs 1-2 m tall, the stems often purplish pigmented, viscid-pubescent, some- times with long simple hairs. Leaf blades mostly 6-10 (-15) cm long, ovate, prominently cordate, crenate-serrate, acuminate, markedly discolorous (whitish beneath), minutely soft-tomentose above and beneath; petioles 1/2-3/4 the length of the blades; stipules ca. 2 mm long, subulate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils or the inflorescence more or less paniculate; pedicels 1-4 cm long, articulated 3-6 mm below the flowers; calyx 1-1.5 cm long, more than half-divided, the lobes 9-15 mm wide, broadly cordate and overlapping, accrescent in fruit, often flushed rose or purplish, minutely stellate-pubescent; corolla rotate, without a dark center, the petals ca. 1.5 cm long (?), yellow; staminal column 2-3 mm long, pallid, the filaments 2 mm long, the anthers yellow; styles ca. 10. Fruits 1-1.5 cm long and wide, stellate-hirsute, enclosed by and only slightly exceeding the calyx, blackish at maturity; mericarps ca. 10, 3-seeded, apically apiculate, the spine 2-3 mm long; seeds 2.5 mm long, dark-pigmented, glabrous.
