Descripción
Shrub to almost 3 m tall, the stems densely stellate-pubescent, the hairs ca. 0.5 mm long, more or less appressed. Leaf blades 8-10 cm long, 7-9 cm wide at midstem, progressively reduced upward, broadly ovate, cordate, irregularly crenate-serrate, acute, palmately 7-9-nerved, essentially concolorous, densely and minutely stellatepubescent above and beneath, somewhat rough to the touch; petioles up to 5.5 cm long (half the length of the blades), progressively shorter upward, with pubescence like stem; stipules ca. 5 mm long, subulate, caducous. Inflorescence a terminal leafless raceme; pedicels 4-14 mm long, ca. 3 mm in diameter, stellate-pubescent; involucel ca. half the length of the calyx, the individual bracts ca. 12, connate basally, ovate-lanceolate, the margins revolute and undulate, prominently ciliate, the hairs 1-2 mm long, whitish; calyx 15 mm long (apparently not accrescent), minutely stellate-puberulent, ca. half-divided, the lobes ovate, prominently 3-5-nerved; corolla tubular, the petals 1.5-2.5 cm long, erect, dark red, externally pubescent, internally glabrous (including margins of claw); staminal column ca. 2 cm long, glabrous, pallid, filamentiferous on distal third; anthers ca. 50, the filaments 2 mm long; styles and stigmas not seen.
