Descripción
Subshrubs 0.5-1 m tall, the stems with some stellate hairs, the nodes very short (5 mm or less). Leaf blades oblanceolate, basally truncate, essentially entire (or with minute serrulations), acuminate, slightly discolorous, 3-nerved from the base but appearing penninerved (the lateral nerves much reduced), glabrate above, nearly so beneath, the margins hispid-ciliate; petioles 2-5 cm long; 1/10-1/3 the length of the blades, sparsely stellate-pubescent to glabrate; stipules 10-13 mm long, subulate, erect, persistent. Inflorescence an open raceme or panicle rising above the leaves, each node with 2-3 stipuliform bractlets; pedicels 2-9 cm long, sparsely stellate-pubescent, articulated 6-10 mm below the flowers; involucel ca. 9-parted, 6-9 mm long, sparsely stellate-pubescent, basally connate forming a cup, the lobes triangular, 1-3-nerved, the sinuses broadly rounded; calyx subequal to involucel (or slightly shorter), ca. half-divided, minutely and sparsely stellate-pubescent; petals 12-20 mm long, pink; staminal column 7-8 mm long, glabrous, pallid, antheriferous subapically. Fruits 9-13 mm in diameter, mericarps ca. 8 mm long (excluding spines), straw-colored, essentially glabrous, 3-spined (1 apical, 2 lateral), the spines erect, 4-7 mm long, retrorsely barbed.
