Descripción
Shrubs or subshrubs 0.5-1 (-1.5) m tall, the stems sparsely to densely stellatepubescent, the hairs highly variable in size, many of them twisted or curled. Leaf blades mostly 4-9 cm long, 2.5-4 times as long as wide, elliptic, sparsely and coarsely pubescent; petioles to 1/3 the length of the blades but usually less than 1/4 the length, the leaves sometimes subsessile; stipules 3-7 mm long, lanceolate, erect, persistent. Flowers usually solitary in the leaf axils; pedicels 1-3.5 cm long in flower, to 6 cm long in fruit; involucellar bracts 6-8, 6-9 mm long, linear lanceolate, distinct, hirsute; calyx subequal to involucel, hirsute, ca. half-divided, the lobes 3-nerved; petals 9-15 mm long, yellow, glabrous adaxially, ciliate on margins of claw, obscurely pubescent abaxially; staminal column pallid, glabrous, ca. half the length of the petals, the filaments 1-1.5 mm long, the anthers ca. 20, yellow; styles pallid, nearly glabrous, the stigmas prominently villous. Fruits greenish maturing yellowish, prominently pubescent; mericarps indehiscent, reticulate-veined, 3-spined, the spines (3-) 7-10 mm long, stout, retrorsely barbed, divergent; seeds 3.5 mm long, glabrous.
