Descripción
Erect subshrubs 1-2 m tall, single-stemmed but widely branching, the stems minutely stellate-pubescent becoming glabrescent, often purplish pigmented. Leaf blades coriaceous, highly variable in form and size, the lower leaves ovate or more or less 3-lobed, remotely and irregularly dentate, the upper leaves narrowly oblong or linear, sometimes hastately toothed at base, otherwise virtually entire, markedly discolorous (sparsely stellate-tomentose and gray-green above, densely stellate- tomentose and whitish beneath); petioles commonly 1/4 the length of the blades (but up to 2/3 as long in juvenile leaves). Inflorescence a lax panicle; pedicels 1.5-3.5 cm long, slender, articulated near middle; calyx 3-5 mm long, minutely pubescent with darkly pigmented midvein; corolla without a dark center, the petals ca. 1 cm long, yellow; staminal column ca. 3 mm long, pallid, minutely and sparsely scabrid toward apex, otherwise glabrous, the filaments 1.5 mm long, the anthers yellowish; styles 5 - 8, pallid, slightly exceeding androecium. Fruits 4-5 mm in diameter, oblate, minutely pubescent; mericarps 5-8, indehiscent, dorsally spurred, the lateral walls evanescent; seeds ca. 2 mm long, endocarp absent. Chromosome number: 2n = 30.A

Occurs widely in Mexico at low elevation, usually below 600 m but occasionally as high as 1500 m. It is commonly found in disturbed situations, such as roadsides and agricultural fields, and flowers throughout the year.
