Shrubs or small trees up to 6 m tall, the young growth ferrugineous, densely and loosely stellate-pubescent. Leaf blades 10-12 cm long (or larger), broadly ovate, cordate, acuminate, discolorous, minutely stellate-pubescent above and beneath; petioles half the length of the blades or less. Flowers solitary (or paired) in the leaf axils; pedicels 9-15 cm long (or more), equaling or exceeding the subtending leaves, densely pubescent, the buds and flowers evidently nodding; calyx 3 (-3.5) cm long, thick-textured, densely ferrugineous-wooly with stellate and stipitate hairs and digitate appendages basally, ca. half-divided, the lobes strongly ribbed; petals 4-5 cm long broadly obovate, apparently reflexed, yellow or orange, pubescent adaxially and abaxially (especially in lower half); staminal column ca. 3 cm long, stellate-pubescent below, tapering upward, the filaments ca. 5 mm long; styles 22- 27, pubescent.
