Shrubs or small trees 3-6 m tall, the young growth densely stellate-pubescent. Leaf blades mostly 6-12 (-17) cm long, broadly ovate, cordate, acuminate, minutely stellate-pubescent above and beneath, slightly discolorous; petioles ca. half the length of the blades. Flowers solitary or paired in the leaf axils, often aggregated at ends of lateral branches; pedicels 0.5-5 cm long (mostly 1-4 cm), erect, pubescent; calyx 8-18 mm long, ferrugineous-pubescent, half or more divided; petals 2-3 cm long, yellow, usually with a red spot at the base, pubescent on margins of claw, otherwise glabrous; staminal column 5-7 mm long, pubescent at base, the filaments 4-5 mm long; styles ca. 15, slender, pallid or purplish. Fruits 15-20 mm in diameter, globose to oblate; mericarps ca. 15, dorsally with lacerate wing (2-3 mm wide) bearing stipitate hairs, 3-seeded; seeds 3 mm long, pubescent. Chromosome number: 2n = 30.
