Descripción
Erect shrubs 3 m tall, the stems coarsely pubescent, the hairs stellate, ferruginous, 0.5-1 mm long. Leaf blades narrowly ovate, to 14 X 6 cm (greatly reduced and narrowed upward to almost bract-like structures 1.5 cm X 2 mm, in the terminal inflorescence), the leaf base slightly cordate (on larger leaves) to more or less truncate or rounded, serrate (the lowermost teeth glandular), acuminate, prominently discolorous, the upper surface green, sparsely pubescent to glabrescent, the lower surface matted-pubescent with interlacing stellate hairs, whitish to markedly ferruginous; petioles coarsely pubescent like stem, 1.5-4.5 cm (shorter upward); stipules inconspicuous, subulate, ca. 3 mm. Inflorescence a narrow terminal panicle of axillary (usually 3-flowered) cymes; peduncles 3-5 mm; pedicels ca. 5 mm, sparsely and minutely pubescent; calyx of 5 deciduous sepals, at anthesis 12- 17 mm, minutely and sparsely pubescent, the appendages obsolete; petals yellow, narrowly spatulate, to 16 X 2-3 mm; stamens ca. 15, 12-13 mm; style longer than the stamens, slender, pallid; gonophore with 5 oblong glands. Fruit body spherical, 5-6 mm diam., whitish-pubescent; spines of the fruit ca. 50, stout (0.5-0.8 mm diam. at base), 2-3 mm long, prominently plumose (the hairs 0.5 mm, whitish, somewhat retrorse), with a straight or curved (rarely uncinate) spinelet at tip.A
