Malvastrum bicuspidatum subsp. tumidum S.R. Hill
Description
Subshrubs 1-2 m tall, well branched above, the stems stellate-pubescent. Leaf blades mostly 5-8 cm long (smaller upward), ovate-elliptic, more or less truncate, serrate, acute, with long simple hairs above (at least on mid-stem leaves), stellatepubescent beneath, concolorous; petioles 2-3 cm long on lower leaves but progressively shorter upward; stipules ca. 8 mm long, pubescent, subulate or falcate. Inflorescence an interrupted terminal raceme; floral bracts bifid, about as wide as long; pedicels 1-2 mm long; involucellar bracts ca. 8 mm long, narrowly lanceolate; calyx 5-9 mm long, half or more divided, sparsely to densely pubescent, somewhat campanulate; petals 7-10 mm long; staminal column pubescent, the anthers fewer than 50; styles and stigmas 10-11, exceeding androecium by 1-2 mm. Fruits 6-8 mm in diameter, often flushed with rose, drying red-brown; mericarps 10-11, ca. 3 mm long, appearing somewhat swollen, apically glabrous or sparsely hirsute with simple or few-armed stellate hairs 0.5-1 mm long, the lateral walls somewhat shiny, smooth and unribbed, with 2 dorsal cusps 0.8~0.9 mm long, endoglossum absent; seeds 1.5-2 mm long.
