Descripción
Erect herbs 1-3 m tall, sparsely pubescent to glabrate. Leaf blades 3-8 (-14) cm long, orbicular or reniform, crenate, undulate, or palmately 5-7-lobulate; petioles ½- 1½ times as long as the blades; stipules 3-5 mm long, 3 mm wide, sometimes larger. Flowers 1-4 in the leaf axils; pedicels several times longer than the calyces, slender; bractlets of the involucel oblong or elliptic (2-4 mm wide); calyx 6-10 mm long, not accrescent; petals 16-25 mm long, purplish, showy; staminal column stellate-pubescent. Fruits ca. 7 mm in diameter; mericarps 10-12, minutely pubescent, obscurely reticulate, costate on the angle between the dorsal and lateral walls, unwinged. Chromosome number: 2n = 42.A
Ecología y Hábitat
Native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor. It has long been used in this region as a food and medicinal plant, and has been introduced to other parts of the world in cultivation for these purposes and more commonly as an ornamental garden flower. In Mexico it occurs in cultivation and is occasionally escaped and naturalized. It flowers throughout the year.A
