Description
Erect perennial herbs or subshrubs, the gossypol glands often obscure (most prominent on calyx), the stems 5-angulate, glabrous. Leaf blades mostly 2-4 cm long, narrowly oblong-lanceolate, 4-10 times as long as wide (except juvenile leaves sometimes wider), entire, acute, glabrous; petioles 1/4-1/2 the length of the blades; stipules 1-2 mm long, subulate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils; pedicels 1 5 cm long (subequal to subtending leaves), distally swollen, surmounted by 3 small involucellar nectaries or nectaries absent; involucellar bractlets 6-9, 0.5-2 mm long, subulate; calyx 8-12 mm long, glabrous, deeply divided, costulate (intercostal areas pale green); petals 1-2 cm long, yellow throughout, minutely pubescent abaxially, glabrous adaxially; staminal column half the length of the petals, pallid, glabrous, the anthers and pollen yellowish; style pallid, the 3 stigmatic lobes decurrent. Capsules 6—8 mm long, ovoid, 3-loculate, externally glabrous, internally prominently ciliate along suture of dehiscence; seeds 2-3 mm long, densely pubes- cent, the hairs brownish, 4-5 mm long.
