Malacothamnus densiflorus (S. Watson) Greene
Description
Shrubs 1 m or more tall, the stems stellate-pubescent, the hairs heterotrichous, mostly or entirely less than 0.5 mm long but sometimes with a few hairs 1.5-2.5 mm long. Leaf blades mostly 3-6 cm long, broadly ovate to orbicular, cordate or truncate, prominently crenate or dentate, acute or obtuse, pedately 5-9-nerved, roughly stellate-pubescent above and beneath; petioles 1/3 the length of the blades or less; stipules 5-12 mm long, falcate, pubescent, persistent. Flowers subsessile in axillary glomerules forming an elongate interrupted inflorescence, often above the leaves; involucellar bracts 5-15 mm long, subulate or filiform; calyx 5-15 mm long, coarsely stellate-hirsute (hispid, the hairs simple to ca. 8-armed, often 3 mm long), ca. half-divided, the lobes 4 mm wide, acuminate, sometimes with a few glandular hairs; petals 1-2 cm long, pink, pubescent on margins of claw, otherwise glabrous; staminal column half the length of the petals or less, pallid, pubescent, the pollen orange-yellow; styles 8-10, glabrous.
