Descripción
Perennial herbs or subshrubs, the stems erect, stellate-pubescent. Leaf blades triangular to hastate, the lower ones up to 10 cm long, 7 cm wide, progressively smaller and narrower upward, usually truncate, crenate-serrate, acute, somewhat discolorous, sometimes with purple blotch along midrib, stellate-pubescent above and beneath, more densely so beneath; petioles ca. half the length of the blades (?); stipules not seen. Inflorescence an apical raceme; pedicels 1-3 cm long, articulated near or above the middle; calyx 8-13 mm long, deeply divided, basally rounded (5- 7 mm wide), yellowish pubescent, without long simple hairs, 10-ribbed; calyx lobes 3 mm wide, 1-ribbed, apiculate, often purplish; petals 10-13 mm long, 3 mm wide apically and narrowed to a long claw 1 mm wide, erect, narrowly spatulate, red, glabrous except stellate-pubescent on claw; staminal column 2.5-3.5 cm long, with scattered pubescence, the filaments 1-2 mm long, the anthers yellow, ca. 40; styles ca. 10. Fruits [immature] hirsute, oblate; mericarps ca. 10, the dorsal wall with several parallel costae, the dorsal angle with prominent spine 1-3 mm long. Chromosome number unknown.A
