Descripción
Shrubs 2-3 m tall, the stems with stellate hairs 2-3 mm long. Leaf blades mostly 6-15 cm long (smaller upward), cordate, 3-5-lobed, the central lobe the largest, crenate, acuminate, lacking foliar nectaries; petioles 1/2-1 times the length of the blades, sometimes less than 5 in upper leaves; stipules 1-2.5 mm long, subulate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils; pedicels 3-10 cm long, exceeding the subtending petioles, with more or less retrorse pubescence; involucel absent; calyx 10-12 mm long, 5-lobed, reflexed in fruit, stellate-pubescent; petals 1.5-3 cm long, purple, ciliate on claw; androecium less than 1 cm long, yellowish, antheriferous at apex, the column pubescent, the filaments 2 mm long; styles 8~12, slender, the stigmas capitate. Fruits up to 4 cm in diameter, schizocarpic, globose-inflated, densely pubescent (especially when young); mericarps 8-12, 2-2.5 cm long, 15-18 mm wide, dehiscent, with fragile walls and with 2 divergent basal spines 6-14 mm long and with stellate pubescence; seeds 3 per mericarp, 3 mm long, warty.
