Descripción
Shrubs 2-4 m tall, more or less densely pubescent with minute stellate hairs and simple hairs 1-2 mm long. Leaf blades up to 19 cm long, broadly ovate, deeply cordate, subentire, acuminate, markedly discolorous, sparsely pubescent above, densely canescent beneath; petioles usually ca. 2/3 the length of the blades; stipules 10-11 mm long, linear or subulate. Flowers often in 2-4-flowered umbels, peduncles solitary, 11-18 cm long; pedicels 2.5-6 cm long, articulated 10-15 mm below the flowers; calyx 1.5-3.5 cm long, densely brown-pubescent, campanulate, half-divided, prominently nerved; corolla tubular, the petals 3-3.5 cm long, orange, glabrous throughout (including the claw); androecium exserted, about twice the length of the corolla, the column 4.5-5.5 cm long, glabrous, pallid, the filaments 3-8 mm long, slender, the anthers yellow; styles 10-13, exceeding androecium, the stigmas purplish. Fruits 2.5-3.5 cm long, 3-4 cm in diameter, truncate with crown of divergent spines 2-4 mm long; mericarps 10-13, 4-6- seeded; seeds 4 mm long, minutely pubescent. Chromosome number unknown.A,1
