Descripción

Shrubs or small trees to 10 m tall; stems copiously and densely stellate pubescent with light yellowish to reddish-brown hairs, becoming dark, grayish-black and glabrate. Leaves, petioles, stipules, and ovaries stellate pubescent. Leaf blade ovate to broadly ovate, 3.5-11.3 (14.8) cm long, 2.3-9.7 (10.9) cm wide, base truncate on very young leaves, soon becoming somewhat oblique to cordate, apex acute, acuminate, or long acuminate, margins remotely serrate to serrulate; indumentum densely stellate pubescent above and below, the hairs persistent; nervation palmately 3-5 (7)-nerved, the nerves densely stellate pubescent; petiole 0.7-3.8 cm long; stipules subulate, ca 2 mm long. Inflorescences 2-5-flowered; pedicels 4-15 mm long, densely stellate pubescent and with scattered gland-tipped hairs; bracts subtending pedicels lanceolate to linear, 3-5 mm long, densely stellate pubescent, pentagonal. Calyx in flower subglobose to urceolate, 7-1 1 mm long, densely stellate pubescent, with scattered gland-tipped hairs; lobes narrowly triangular to triangular, 1.5-3 mm long, 2.5-4 mm wide, apices acute and somewhat apiculate; calyx in fruit acutely pentagonal, subglobose, 1.4-2.7 cm long, sparingly stellate pubescent, with scattered, gland-tipped hairs, pale purple or pink-yellow (when dry), lobes triangular, 4-11 mm long, 5-10 mm wide, apices acute to acuminate and apiculate. Petals included, oblanceolate to spatulate, 7-10.5 mm long, 1.5-3 mm broad, with scattered stellate hairs, purple to mauve. Longistylous flowers: staminal column 3-4 mm long, glabrous; anthers sessile, 1-5 mm long; staminodes 0.2-0.4 mm long; ovary 1.5-2 mm long, 1-1.5 mm broad; stipe 2-3 mm long, styles 2-3 mm long, with scattered stellate hairs. Brevistylous flowers: staminal column 2.5-3.5 mm long; filaments 1-2 mm long; anthers ca 1.5 mm long; staminodes 0.1-0.5 mm long; ovary 1-1.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm diam; stipe 2.5- 3.5 mm long; styles 0.5-1 mm long, stellate. Capsule deeply retuse at the apex, 4-5 mm tall, 4-5 mm diam, densely stellate pubescent, subtended by a stipe 5- 6 mm long; seeds ovate, rounded in cross section, 1 per carpel, 2.5-3 mm long, 1.5-2 mm diam.A
