Shrubs or subshrubs to 1.5 m tall, openly branched, minutely and densely stellate-pubescent throughout. Leaf blades mostly 3-6 cm long (smaller upward), ovate, cordate, serrate, acute, discolorous, with raised reticulate veins beneath; petioles 1/4-1/2 the length of the blades on midstem leaves, progressively shorter upward, the leaves grading into sessile floral bracts; stipules 3-4 mm long, subulate. Inflorescence a few-flowered head largely enclosed by a bract or bracts; peduncles axillary, up to 4 cm long below to subsessile toward the apex of the branches; floral bracts subtending the inflorescences sessile, peltate, prominently veined at base; involucellar bracts ca. 9, bifurcate; petals 1.5-2.5 cm long, clear yellow, exceeding floral bracts and showy; androecium nearly equaling the petals, yellowish.
