Discusión taxonómica
Cheilanthes purpusii is most closely allied to C. pellaeopsis and C. hintoniorum, differing in having smaller segments and only slightly decurrent indusia. Cheilanthes purpusii has lateral segments mostly 3–7 mm long (terminal ones 5–8(–12) mm), whereas C. pellaeopsis has lateral segments mostly 7–12 mm long (terminal ones to 20 mm), and those of C. hintoniorum are even longer. Cheilanthes purpusii resembles C. complanata, but the indusia of the former are papillate and the rhizome scales are black. Cheilanthes purpusii also resembles C. arizonica, but has indusia slightly decurrent and the stipes not grooved.A
