Discusión taxonómica

The distinctness of many of the species described in the Rojas (1997) publications seems dubious and will require a great deal more study before one has confidence in their definition. Many seem no more than minor variants of already recognized species. J . Sm. ("sensu stricto") in its blade size, creeping rhizomes, and orange-yellowish rhizome scales, but its rhizomes are thinner (3-6 mm diam. vs. 9-15 mm), rhizome scales are entire (vs. dentate), and the fertile fronds are similar to sterile fronds (vs. the sterile fronds longer and wider). In blade shape and size it resembles E. corifolium Mickel, but differs in its longer (3-10 mm vs. 4-6 mm) and orange (vs. blackish) rhizome scales, small (0.5-1 mm vs. 1-2 mm) and scattered (vs. abundant) blade scales. This species is very similar to E. lingua (C. Pres!) Brack. in size and blade shape, but differs in having thicker rhizomes (3-6 mm vs. 1.5-3 mm), yellowish (vs. blackish) and longer (3-10 mm vs. 1-2 mm) rhizome scales, longer fronds (20-62 cm vs. 12-34 cm), and fertile fronds equal to sterile fronds (vs. sterile fronds shorter than fertile fronds).A
