Descripción
Trunks erect or rarely prostrate, mostly 1–3 m tall; stipes (at least the basal part) and croziers on stem apex densely scaly; scales castaneous, with marginal cells differentiated in size and orientation from those on central area, each scale with a dark seta at apex; lamina monomorphic to distinctly dimorphic, stipes and rachis castaneous or blackish (rarely dark brown), fronds 1- to 3-pinnate, frequently with 1 to several pairs of basal skeletonized pinnae (formerly called aphlebia); veins free (sometimes in G. podophylla, the lowest veinlets confluent); sori dorsal on veinlets, exindusiate (hemitelioid indusia present in G. capensis only); 64 spores per sporangium.
